ULI Florida Initiative on Regional Cooperation

Building Florida’s Future
State Strategies for Regional Cooperation

Two years ago the Urban Land Institute launched the ULI Florida Initiative on Regional Cooperation. This initiative was led by the ULI Florida Statewide Committee, a broad cross section of leaders from the public, private and non-profit sectors. The Committee’s recommendations, based on fact finding, research and careful listening across the state, recognized the importance for regional approaches and solutions to ensure quality of life and success in the global economy. If Florida is to achieve a competitive advantage as it continues to accommodate a growing and changing population, the time to act is now! UrbanPlan II

This high school program teaches students the challenges and trade-offs involved in urban development, while at the same time encouraging them to think critically about land use issues.

ULI Southeast Florida/Caribbean successfully implemented its first UrbanPlan II program at Cooper City High School in April 2005. One class of seniors, taught by economics and legal studies teacher successfully completed the program during the final quarter of the 2005 Spring Semester. Cooper City High is a major, regional public high school. The Cooper City High School plans to implement UrbanPlan II into three classes in the Fall semester of 2005. We also hope to expand to one Miami-Dade County classroom in the Spring of 2006. The ability to teach a program such as UrbanPlan II at the secondary level will help to pull together Southeast Florida’s diverse populations and produce a sense of shared community.
